Do you want a beach that feels wild, remote, and untouched, but is still only 20 minutes from the airport?
Gunung Payung Beach is Nusa Dua’s answer to the dramatic coastlines of Uluwatu. Tucked behind towering limestone cliffs and guarded by a sacred temple, it offers privacy, drama, and raw natural beauty that you simply won’t find on the main resort strip.
This Gunung Payung Beach guide will show you how to find and enjoy this hidden gem.
The Adventure of Getting There
The beach is located at the end of a winding road past the Bali National Golf Club. You simply follow the signs to Pura Gunung Payung (Gunung Payung Temple).
The Shuttle Service: Historically, this beach was only for the fit and brave, requiring a hike down hundreds of steep concrete stairs in the heat. Thankfully, the local village now operates a convenient shuttle bus service. For a small fee, they will drive you down the steep cliff road and pick you up when you are done.
The Monkeys: Be aware that the temple area at the top of the cliff is home to a troupe of grey macaques. They are generally cheeky but harmless. Just keep your snacks and shiny objects (like sunglasses) hidden in your bag until you reach the sand below.
Why Visit? The “Raw” Bali
The Vibe: There are no beach clubs here. No loud DJ music. No rows of hotel umbrellas. It is just crashing waves, high green cliffs, and soft white sand. It is the perfect spot for couples or solo travelers seeking peace and quiet.
The Water: The ocean here is a bit wilder than at Geger Beach. It gets deeper faster and the waves can be stronger, which makes it fun for strong swimmers or bodyboarding.
The Photos: The contrast of the vivid green cliffs, the pristine white sand, and the deep blue water makes it arguably the most photogenic beach in the entire Nusa Dua area.
What to Know Before You Go
Because it is a “hidden” beach, facilities are limited. There are a few small stalls down on the sand selling drinks and instant noodles, but you won’t find full restaurants. It is a good idea to bring your own water and perhaps a picnic lunch.
